Biography
Professor Lastowka teaches courses in the laws of property, intellectual property, and the regulation of technology. His current research project is a book about law and online communities. He publishes regularly on internet law and intellectual property issues and has been quoted in publications such as Nature, The Washington Post, USA Today, Wired, The Economist, and The National Law Journal.
Professor Lastowka will be a visiting professor at Columbia Law School in Spring 2009. In March 2008, he was a visiting artist in residence at the Rutgers-Camden department of Fine Arts. During Spring 2007 he was a visiting professor at the University of Graz, Austria. In 2005-2006, he was a fellow at the Rutgers Center for Cultural Analysis, co-leading a working group with Professor Goodman on the interdisciplinary study of intellectual property.
Professor Lastowka earned his B.A. summa cum laude at Yale College in 1991, where he won the Veech Prize for creative writing. In 1994, he entered the United States Peace Corps, serving for two years in the former Soviet republic of Turkmenistan, and co-authoring the first Turkmen-English dictionary. He earned a J.D. from the University of Virginia Law School in 2000, where he was a Hardy Cross Dillard Scholar, a member of the Raven Society, a fellow of the Society of Fellows, and an Article Editor on the Virginia Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Walter K. Stapleton of the Federal Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Before joining the faculty in 2004, he practiced intellectual property and technology litigation in Philadelphia at Dechert LLP.
